WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE

The scale of the challenge facing the healthcare service in England is stark. If funding remains flat, the English NHS could have a shortfall of up to £30 billion by 2021.[i]

However, this challenge is not unique to England. Healthcare systems across Europe are struggling with similar demographics and financial imperatives. Recognising this, in May 2013, AbbVie, together with the European Public Health Association and Philips, invited healthcare stakeholders from around Europe to discuss how healthcare systems could become more sustainable and meet the challenges of managing long-term conditions.

The conclusions were clear: lifelong prevention, early diagnosis and effective intervention all have a key role. Furthermore, it was agreed that if we want to achieve healthcare sustainability, then governments, stakeholders, people living with illness and companies must work in close partnership to change the way healthcare is delivered in Europe.

Working with an independent steering group  the Patient, manager, expert: individual report, was launched in the House of Commons in June 2014 with three core themes:

  1. Embedding a person-centred approach, which considers the individual rather than a siloed focus on their condition(s)
  2. Helping individuals to navigate the healthcare system and manage their condition with confidence
  3. Using technology to improve the delivery of services and care closer to home and equipping individuals to self-manage

To help implement the report’s recommendations, AbbVie commissioned three new pilot initiatives, designed to encourage innovation in the core areas identified by the report:

  • A partnership with The Hepatitis C Trust and Addaction, to help them develop a programme that provides buddying support for people who are undergoing treatment
  • A new, shared decision-making tool to improve conversations and decisions about health and work between patients and their healthcare professionals
  • Creating the UK’s first early intervention clinic for people with musculoskeletal disorders who have been signed off from work so they can stay in work or return to work as soon as they can
