Oncology

Our scientists and oncologists strive to give patients improved treatment outcomes and a life beyond cancer by developing therapies that elevate the standards of care.

Building on expertise to tackle difficult-to-treat cancers

With over 200 different types of cancers and 50% of people in the UK set to develop cancer within their lifetime, cancer represents a complex and unrelenting healthcare challenge.

At AbbVie, we are committed to transforming standards of care across multiple cancers, advancing a dynamic pipeline of investigational therapies, and accelerating the future of oncology.

Research interests

New scientific developments hold the potential to make a remarkable impact on difficult-to-treat cancers. We are investing in innovative treatments aiming to ensure greater precision with transformative outcomes for patients.

We strive to deliver transformative therapies that uniquely combine our deep and evolving knowledge in core areas of biology with our experience in cutting-edge technologies.

  • Our four core areas of biology; regulated cell death - apoptosis, B-cell signaling, immuno-oncology and Novel tumour targeting, evaluating the science of cancer growth and progression.

  • Our four core technologies; antibody drug conjugates, targeted protein degradation, antibodies, and cellular therapies, are being applied to discover potentially cutting-edge cancer therapies.

Across the globe, AbbVie scientists and researchers are currently evaluating  investigational medicines across solid tumours and blood cancers, with UK trial sites making a key contribution to our oncology research.

Oncology focus areas

We are focused on developing and accelerating access to transformative therapies that improve patient outcomes in a selected set of debilitating and widespread cancers. These include haematological malignancies and solid tumour cancers.

Blood cancers

Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer and third biggest cancer killer in the UK. There are more than 100 individual blood cancers and most of these are types of leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma.

OUR FOCUS AREAS

Solid tumors

Solid tumours make up some of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Despite recent innovations, survival rates remain low for many types of solid tumor, particularly in the metastatic setting.

OUR FOCUS AREAS

Going beyond our medicines

As treatment paradigms shift, our intent is to continue supporting clinical and patient communities to keep pace with new developments in a sustainable way, through disease awareness programmes, medical education and continued investment in scientific and medical research.

By listening to and working with these communities, we want to help people with cancer focus on living with their condition, not suffering from or being defined by it.
